Paris...La Galcante
I go to
I'm often saddened by the ever so frequent casualty of little shops which disappear in favour of spiritless franchises. But every now and then I discover a new gem and thank the heavens that there are still untouched treasures in
Last week I discovered one of these gems. Walking down a street I happened to look into a courtyard where I saw an intriguing sign, it read 'LA GALCANTE Presse Anciennes'.
I couldn't help myself and ventured into unknown territory. As I walked through the door I could feel my heart beat rise rapidly. It was like walking into the back rooms of a museum where all the old documents are archived. From floor to ceiling this 'Ancienne' Press shop...( shop is an understatement...it is more like a temple) was packed, I mean PACKED , with newspapers and magazines. .. you will find everything from French newspapers dating back to 1800, comics, movie magazines, food magazines to American Vogue from 1940's , 50's and recent as well.
My advice is to treat this place with the respect it deserves and ask Jacques or Juliette before pulling out boxes. They will willingly help and let you stay in their Aladdin’s cave as long as you want. If you are looking for something specific, ask them, they have back rooms with bookcases filled with more treasures.
